Almodóvar’s first English-language feature film
Line of Events
Ingrid and Marta were close friends in their youth, when they worked together at the same magazine. After many years apart, they reunite in an extreme but strangely sweet situation. IMDb editor Arno Kazarian gives a brief overview of the 12 films that screened at the 2024 New York Film Festival, including Honora and the dangerous and extremely erotic Misericordia.
Excellently done, the film itself really carries a dramatic tone along with some humor sprinkled throughout, and it’s entertaining to say the least
The Room Next Door is a 2024 drama film based on the 2020 novel What Are You Going Through, starring Julianne Moore as Ingrid, a writer who receives devastating news from a friend and colleague she hasn’t seen in years. On her way to the hospital, she meets Martha (Tilda Swinton), and everything seems to be going well until Martha asks Ingrid to help her commit suicide, since no one else is ready to do the job. However, I don’t think this film is for everyone, as it can be a bit slow and the dialogue takes a while to blossom into the melodramatic atmosphere that I love to see in stories.
But I think anyone who is interested in dialogue and good acting should definitely give this film a try
The acting is very impressive, as two of the best actresses in the industry right now are doing great work and it doesn’t seem like they’re trying too hard, he’s just that good! This also makes the entire film very interesting and I don’t think modern actors could really convey this story now if they were the main characters, there’s something about these two that really creates a powerful connection with each other, and I really respect that. Of course, John Turturro was hired for a good reason, and it was really nice to see him again as Ingrid’s ex.
Overall, a very well made and decent film, with great acting and a stellar story that really brings it all together
However, the flaw lies in the beginning, the backstory was completely unnecessary, and I really don’t understand why they needed to show all those walls. I think it was an attempt to fill in the timeline, but I found it to be quite random and unrelated to the subject matter of most of the film. I didn’t get it, also the acting and dialogue in the prehistoric era was just terrible and really could have been improved or removed, really.
Rating: London Film Festival, October 20
It was enjoyable and kept me entertained throughout, but it’s not for everyone. I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the cast or just enjoys films in general.
