However, when a mysterious killer stalks the Los Angeles star, blood threatens to reveal his dark past. Maxxine is a film that really emphasizes the style, but falls short in the substance department. While I appreciated the throwbacks to 80s slasher and horror films, the plot and execution felt a bit disjointed and lacked coherence.
Despite this, the film’s unique style ultimately overcomes its shortcomings
Mia Goth again gives an enigmatic performance, although her character felt less compelling compared to the earlier parts of the trilogy. The third act was a bit disappointing as it didn’t match the intense growth. As a fan of the genre, I found elements to enjoy, but I couldn’t be more disappointed with the less than epic finale, especially after the thrilling conclusions of the previous two films. A24 has produced some of the most memorable horror films of the 21st century.
