On an island of rich and poor, teenager John B enlists the help of his three best friends to find a legendary treasure linked to his father’s disappearance. Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline and their OBX co-stars quiz each other about the best lines from the hit Netflix series. It was filmed in Charleston, South Carolina; was originally intended to film in Wilmington, North Carolina.
So what’s not to like!?
After watching all 3 seasons of Outer Banks, I can’t deny that I was entertained and amused: all episodes are full of fast-paced adventures, treasure hunts and villain chases, all set in exotic locations and, as an added bonus, with some romantic entanglements between the young and attractive cast. Well, I have some reservations too. Everything that happens is extremely far-fetched and unreal: how this group of teenage friends manages to escape again and again right under the noses of the police or heavily armed criminals, often in a hail of bullets but always unscathed; or how they solve puzzles (such as centuries-old hidden treasures or the location of the legendary El Dorado) with a flick of the wrist or through unexpected lucky coincidences.
And of course silly nicknames like JJ, Pope and John B (what does that B stand for?)
The young actors are clearly meant to illustrate the meaning of true friendship, but their youthful demeanor slowly wears on your nerves, and so do the inevitable upside-down baseball caps. They all look good, but the acting is just adequate, with only Drew Starkey really standing out as the troublesome Rafe, and Rudy Pankow being quite convincing as the resourceful, ADHD-driven JJ. In fact, it’s more of a teen show, barely crossing the lines of The Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew.

Maybe as a smart adult I shouldn’t watch it, but sometimes it’s nice to just go with the flow of light and fun without thinking too much. The final scene of season 3 set the stage for the next season, I bet I won’t be able to resist. Again…
