A family of ranchers in Montana is confronted by others encroaching on their land. Forry J. Smith, who plays Lloyd, is an experienced man in the world of rodeo. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) often seems to “forget” his Montana accent and revert to his usual Southern California voice.

This series has been running since 2018, but now I watched it for the first time. Last night I finished the first episode of the first season, it’s about 90 minutes long. As for the acquaintance with the Dutton family, we see that they have a strong influence in their valley, but reflect the “attacks”. The other is from the neighboring Indian reservation, which wants to return part of its land and some cattle.

To cope with all this and the huge size of his ranch, Dutton (who is reliably played by 60-year-old Kevin Costner) has several adult cowboy sons and a helicopter with a dedicated pilot. The reason I watched the first episode of the first season (on the Peacock streaming channel) was to get a feel for the Dutton family, because I’m currently watching ten episodes of the later Taylor Sheridan show 1883, which is sort of a prequel. It was (fictionally) 1883 when the Dutton family from Tennessee joined a larger group to go on a wagon train from Fort Worth, Texas, “somewhere in the West.” They must have stopped when they got to Montana. Again, this is all fiction, but if we look at the age of the men and the fact that Costner was born in 1955, his character would probably be the great-great-grandson of patriarch Dutton (played by Tim McGraw) in 1883.
Now, in my 70s, I prefer to spend time watching “pleasant” stories
“Yellowstone” is a really wonderful series, all the actors are first-rate, the cinematography and sound are excellent. It’s just not a program I could invest myself in and keep watching. It’s hard to find characters with redeeming qualities, and I really don’t like long-running shows that constantly focus on arguments and fights, and often murder. NB – "1883" – a really beautiful and interesting series, as it faithfully portrays the great difficulties of uprooting and traveling through unknown territories in an attempt to find a new life in a new place.
